That photo was taken VERY EARLY in the new era of bigger trailers. The Feds finally allowed 45 foot trailers in 1983, but they were still only 96 inches wide. When I went to work at Conway Western Express in 1989, they were still using 28 foot / 96 inch wide " wedge " LTL trailers, where the nose was wedge shaped to have a bit more cube. In reality it only damaged more palletized freight as dock workers RAMMED the first 2 pallets through the nose. I had a bad cut on my arm from trying to hook up to a " Bullet Nose pup ". Preferred did modify some 40 foot trailers with a 5 foot plug.
