Here's a photo I took on October 22, 1978, FORTY-SEVEN AGO, of a westbound Southern Railway freight train with Burlington Northern pool power passing the now-razed station in the small hamlet of English, Indiana. This is on the line that links Louisville, KY with St. Louis, MO. I took this photo when I was living in Louisville for about a year while working as a ticket / gate agent for the now-defunct Trans World Airlines. I did a lot of railfanning in my off hours and there was quite a bit of interesting stuff in the southern Indiana / northern Kentucky region. In addition to the Class Ones, and within a relatively short driving distance, were the shortlines Louisville New Albany & Corydon, the Algiers Winslow & Western and the Yankeetown Dock Railway. The Southern Indiana was another shortline on the north side of the Ohio River at Louisville. Amtrak's
FLORIDIAN was operating when I was there and used the L&N and the former Monon.
When St. Louis-bound Southern Railway trains used to leave Louisville, they would cross the Ohio River on the K&IT Bridge (see corresponding links) and, on the north end of the bridge in New Albany, IN, the track arrangement was such that they would loop under themselves, Tehachapi Loop style, before heading west. This was "corrected" by 1978 when I was there and the trains just made a left turn on some new track when they came off the bridge and headed west.

Here's a recent GOOGLE Streetview image that shows what this same area looks like today. Sadly, a lot of quaint train stations that were a throwback to how railroading used to be have been met by bulldozers over the last forty years or so.
