His medals are nothing unusual for someone with his rank and time in service. In the military you get certain medals/ribbons just for showing up in various conflict/war zones. Others are awarded for meritorious service.

Yes, I am a military veteran. I served for two years active duty (and four years inactive reserve) with an honorable discharge. I have both a bronze star medal and an army commendation medal, along with the regular "hardware" that most everyone else serving at the time received -- equating to several rows of ribbons on the uniform.
