I didn't record the consist of the train but I'm pretty sure I was at the rear of the train, or close to it, when I took that photo. A dome car was added to the train at Atlanta. The train ran daily from New York and Washington D.C. to Atlanta and tri-weekly from there to New Orleans. For several years there was a coast-to-coast sleeper that ran on the Southern Crescent and the Sunset Limited. In pre-Amtrak days and after SP shut down their L.A. coach yard, the Sunset Limited equipment (including the coast-to-coast sleeper) ran to San Francisco three-times-per-week for servicing as part of an expanded Coast Daylight.
Since Amtrak took over the train, I don't believe it has anywhere close to the volume of passengers when compared to Southern Railway days. Today's Crescent is about one-fourth the length of this train.
