During the last several months, I chased the Cal Northern Tracy, Woodland, and Corning jobs--all had one or two GP15s and no beltpack in sight. The Woodland and Corning jobs generally meet and swap cars at Delavan, and the block signals and (mostly) 40mph speeds add to the attraction. It's an easy chase on the old 99W frontage road that runs right along the tracks (the adjacent I-5 often suffers from a dearth of offramps). The line south of Tracy is mostly paralleled by CA 33, and the speed is about 25mph. Trains can be as much as 25 or so cars, mostly boxcars and covered hoppers. Classic railroading--all they need is a caboose.
