The new Drake Cement, LLC plant is nearing completion in tiny Drake, Arizona on May 30, 2009. Nearly 100 years after Santa Fe , Prescott & Phoenix Railway subsidiary Verde Valley Railway built a new junction at Cedar Glade in 1912, Drake’s yard and wye have been completely rebuilt to serve the new plant. Nearby limestone mines, abundant water in the Chino Aquifer and adjacent access to the BNSF’s Phoenix Line (aka the Peavine) were the primary reasons the Peruvian-based Cementos Lima SA company petitioned to build their plant here. Once the plant opens in late 2009/early 2010, BNSF Railway, Arizona Central Railroad (owners of Clarkdale’s Verde Canyon Railroad) and Drake Cement will share trackage rights at the Drake wye.
