The 12,633ft San Francisco Peaks loom large above downtown Flagstaff , Arizona on an unseasonably cold and rainy May 30, 2009. The Flag Local’s BNSF Shovecar BN 12344 and a lone hopper rest on the wye in the quiet yard. The north leg of the wye that heads to the right out of the photo once served the massive Southwest Forest Industries-Stone Container Flagstaff Lumber Mill, which closed in 1992. Currently downtown Flagstaff only sees 40-50 Transcon trains a day, a stark reminder of the slow economy, especially in contrast to the record 120+ trains that plied the rails through Flagstaff during the summers of 2005-2006.
