East Flagstaff’s former Purina Siding/Railhead Yard sees a bit of action today as a Westbound general merchandise train is headed up by BNSF 5049 (GE C44-9W). Re-christened McPhetridge Siding in the 1990s in honor of a longtime local Santa Fe Railway employee, the small yard is nearly empty except for some ballast cars and the Flagstaff Local with two boxcars and BNSF 121 (GP60M). Nestle-Purina Petcare’s Flagstaff Manufacturing Facility still receives a healthy dose of cars and is the area’s largest customer, even featuring its own small locomotive. Due north of this location and across the street (aka Route 66), Railhead yard was originally built in the late 1950s as a literal ‘Railhead’ for construction materials for the then new Lake Powell / Glen Canyon Dam. In later years, it served as a transload area for rail equipment for the new Black Mesa & Lake Powell Railroad at Page, until its waning years in the mid-90s as a pulpwood and woodchip facility for the Apache Railway and ATSF. The yard and spur track across Route 66 were removed in the late 1990s and the area is now home to Best Buy and other retail shops adjacent to the Flagstaff Mall
