Fire destroys Casa Grande's historic train depot
Casa Grande (AZ) Dispatch
by Joe Meahl June 06, 2009

Fire destroyed the historic Casa Grande train depot on a
windy Friday afternoon as 35 firefighters from four
departments and districts needed more than two hours to put
out the blaze.

City officials recently had discussed how to preserve the
1939 structure's history. The city had gained ownership under
an agreement in which Union Pacific Railroad had required
moving the old station from its Main Street location
downtown, but experts had said that was not practical.

The fire became visible about 3 p.m. and by 4:45 p.m.,
firefighters were still working to put the last of it out,
according to Casa Grande Fire Battalion Chief David Staub.
Firefighters fought defensively, to protect nearby buildings,
and were hampered by strong winds pushing the flames to the
building's north side. Only part of a shell of the depot
remained.

The heaviest part of the fire was on the west side of the
depot but later crews had to fight a fire under the roof of
the east side, Staub said. The building had a number of small
rooms, which made firefighting more difficult, as did the
heavy wood construction. The depot had long been vacant and
that added to the danger to firefighters.

"We couldn't put firefighters inside," he said, because the
building was in poor condition. The west roof and several
parts of the west side collapsed within the first 40 minutes.

Casa Grande called on fire companies from Eloy, Maricopa and
Gila River, which went to the scene and helped. Four Casa
Grande engine companies and one each from the other
departments were involved.

Staub said he did not know how the blaze started but an
investigator was on scene waiting for it to cool down before
going to work.

A witness said he saw the fire start in some railroad ties
nearby and quickly spread to the depot.

Because homeless people frequently were seen around the
station, it is not known if anybody was inside the depot when
the fire started. No injuries were reported.

"There is no way we could know if somebody was inside," Staub
said.

An Arizona Public Service Co. crew was called to the scene
because of damage to a power line.

Casa Grande started in 1879 as a railroad town, and the
station always had been considered an integral part of its
history.

The City Council was told during a retreat session recently
that two construction companies had said the building was in
bad shape and that it would cost more to restore than to
build a replica.

Another problem is that if the station had been moved - a
very expensive undertaking - it would lose its historical
status, meaning no grants for renovation.

City Councilman Dick Powell had suggested instead
constructing a replica of an earlier wooden building that
burned in the 1930s.

Casa Grande is on the route of the Sunset Limited.
