I was told at least 8 years ago that UP’s long term plan has always been to eventually be done with the FRC. This came from a high ranking employee in Omaha that happens to be a family friend. At the time, the only circumstance that would have made the project take place rapidly was a MAJOR slide in the canyon, which obviously has not happened.
I’ve also recently been told that there are in fact serious talks about opening up the original no 1 track over the summit on a very limited basis while T41 is retrofitted for stacks. Then again, last year I was told that the 2nd main between switch 9 and shed 10 would be in operation by the end of 2009. As anyone that has been up there recently can attest, that portion of the line looks the same as it has for the last 15 years and there has been ZERO work in terms of the 2nd main, only work on problems with the concrete ties.
What will actually happen is anyone’s guess, but I do see Donner being the so called “winner” eventually, though it ain’t gonna happen in the next 18 months, that’s for sure….
