Trainnews - volume 2 - issue 152 - 06/25/09

TODAY'S PHOTO

At this year's opening day at the East Broad Railroad on June 6, 2009, the EBT's unique gasoline powered motorcar No. M-1 made a rare appearance out of the roundhouse. The M-1 was built in 1926 in EBT's shops by their employees. It was constructed from parts supplied by the J. G. Brill Company of Philadelphia and the Westinghouse Corporation. It is a very unique motorcar, as it is 3-foot gauge, and unlike most gas-electric motorcars, it was never converted to diesel. The M-1 retains its original 1926 Brill in-line six cylinder gasoline engine, which has never received a major overhaul, and the historic motorcar is in excellent running condition.. The M-1 is seen in this photo in EBT's Orbisonia PA yard on display on opening day as EBT's 3-foot gauge 2-8-2 No. 15 switches cars on an adjacent track.

Harold H. Carstens, president of Carstens Publications, Inc. and publisher of Railfan & Railroad and Railroad Model Craftsman magazines, died at his home in Newton, New Jersey on June 23, 2009. Hal made significant contributions to the hobby and was greatly admired by many. His column "Publisher's Desk" which appeared at the beginning of each issue of Railfan & Railroad was always interesting, as well as the vintage photos he included in the column. Hal was a popular guest speaker at banquets and other gatherings, and his presentation of photos he took in the 1930s and during World War II were outstanding. Hal will be missed by many railfans and modelers alike.
