Making its annual summer pilgrimage to Phoenix (always in June/July it seems), Ringling Bros. And Barnum & Bailey Circus’ 'Red Train' rests after a busy night at UPRR's Kendall Yard, east Phoenix , AZ. on June 24, 2009. Union Pacific traditionally brings the Circus train into Phoenix late in the evening, where automobile traffic is at a minimum as they unload the animal carriers in downtown Phoenix . This allows an easy, one-block-from-the-tracks transfer to US Airways Arena, and the centuries-old tradition of walking the elephants down the street and into the Big Top!
NOTE: By 2013, the new PHX SkyTrain Sky Harbor Airport people mover will be using a new two-track flyover bridge over the UPRR (built within the right of way of the 44th Street trench-below the billboard sign.) This people mover will connect METRO light rail (just 1 block out of the photo to the right) along a nearly 5-mile long corridor south and west to all the parking garages and terminals of Sky Harbor Airport.
