CSX has assigned some General Electric C40-8Ws to helper service on its Keystone Sub west of Cumberland, MD. The C40-8Ws are used to assist heavy manifest freights, coal drags, and grain trains over the steep grades in this mountainous region, providing additional power or dynamic braking as needed. Seeing the wide-nose GE diesels in helper service is a welcome relief to the usual EMD SD50s, which CSX has utilized as helpers on the Keystone Sub almost exclusively for the past 15 years. On March 31, 2009, C40-8W No. 7735 was assigned to assist an east bound coal train, seen in this photo ducking under the former Western Maryland Railway's massive Keystone Viaduct near Glade City, PA. The 7735 and the diesel it is paired with, SD50-2 No. 8607, will be uncoupled from the consist at the west portal of sand Patch tunnel and proceed west to assist another train.
