Re: Cost of a locomotive?

As a shortline operator, I can only dream of a new locomotive. As for the used market nowdays, it is a sellers market with few exceptions. There are virtually no switcher units for sale that amount to more than scrap anywhere.

In the past 10 years I have been able to buy several SW-8's for our operations for under $40 grand apiece. Last year I made five trips across the US and finally found a SW1200RS for $200 grand. The biodiesel craze has sucked up everything in the way of switchers and geeps in decent condition.

A SW1500 or MP15 can go as high as $425,000. Older units that have not had their wiring switchgear and braked updated are being held for remanufacture or conversion to slugs.

Big power surplused from the Class I's sees only a limited demand unless it has been upgraded and then it is snatched up by a leasing company who won't sell it.

A little perspective from the "little guy" sise of railroading.
