More TALGO Trains for U.S.

The latest reports in the railroad press indicate that the state of Wisconsin has ordered two 14-car TALGO sets from Patentes Talgo, S.A., the Spanish manufacturer of the low-slung trains, for Chicago-Milwaukee Hiawatha Service trains.

The two sets would be assembled in Wisconsin in an arrangement similar to the 1998 Washington DOT/Amtrak TALGO order of five sets which was assembled by Pacifica Marine in Seattle for Pacific Northwest Cascades services.

The reports have not outlined the makeup of the sets. If similar to the Cascades sets, they would likely include regular coach, business class, cafe and dining/lounge intermediate cars, and power and baggage end cars.

The Hiawatha Service corridor is just 85 miles, which may preclude full dining/lounge cars, but the state is reportedly looking into the possibility of extending service to Madison, the state capital.

Current services are protected by two Horizon/Amfleet consists.
