The portion from Flanigan to Wendel was left in place to serve the line to Susanville. After SPI
shut the mill down the privately owned line from Wendel to Susanville was taken up. The line from
Wendel to Alturas was abandoned by the UP and scrapped accordingly. There are three completely
separate situations here. There is no traffic available into Susanville though there would be some
potential to Wendel if the Co-Gen plant starts to use rail. The only active shipper on the line
is the tie shredding operation just west of the junction at Wendel. The base uses the spur off the
ex-WP line and hasn't used the SP back door for some time. Make no bones about it V&S is a scrapper and the line has been purchased for that use.
