Here's an "aerial" photograph of Amtrak Cascades #500, looking down from the top deck of the Interstate 405 Fremont Bridge across the Willamette River in Portland, Ore on Aug. 9, 2009. The train has just left Portland Union Station on its way up the corridor to Seattle, where it is due at around noon.

This view is brought to you by the good folks at Portland's Providence Health Systems, whose sponsorship of the annual Bridge Pedal bicycle event allows us to get such shots. Bridge Pedal draws nearly 20,000 bicyclists and walkers to Portland's 10 Willamette River bridges, particularly the two Interstate Highway crossings which are off-limits to other than motor vehicles every other day of the year.

The top deck of the Fremont Bridge provides excellent views of the BNSF Fallbridge Sub on the west bank, over which Amtrak also travels; the UP Albina Yard on the east bank; and the TriMet MAX Yellow Line on the east bank.

The top deck of the I-5 Marquam Bridge, on the southern edge of the downtown area, provides views of the UP, former SP Portland-Eugene main and the South Waterfront line of Portland Streetcar.
