Don't believe for a second that it's service improvement. Of course they will need 2-car trains because the schedule is set to have trains running at less frequency. Half-hour service on all of the lines outside of rush-hour and mid-day service.

"Look everybody, our trains are longer! But pay no attention to overall reduced capacity since more of our brand new trains will spend time in the yard instead of out on the lines"

A real major step back if you ask me.
