It's the Great Northern's line over Elk Park Pass that extended southward from Great Falls to Butte. The southern, most scenic portion, between Basin and Butte was abandoned in 1972. My recollection is that there was a cement plant at Basin that was the reason service continued north of there, although I believe portions of the remaining line are now just used for car storage (someone can correct me).
