Track water pans were common in Europe due to the small size of locomotive tenders. Usage in the U.S. was limited to areas with long - distance level running. New York Central was a big user of track pans. In the mountains of the West stops for fuel were more often needed anyways, so adding water at the same time didn't impact running times.
