Same reason there's always a lot of smart-a** ballyhooing on this forum, every flippin time someone merely asks a simple generic question.

Of course, it could have been someone's smart-alec question to start with; but then maybe not. At least The Montezuma Yardmaster had the decency to give straight answer, just in case it was a straight question.
Whatever technical reasons might exists for it, anyone who works along the track, often alone, is darn glad they do make a lot of racket. The more racket the merrier - the safer it is out there! Trouble is, most train noise radiates to the sides (Horn excepted), where it just bothers the neighbors, rather than alerting anyone working the wayside up ahead! Now, if we could just figure out how to re-direct all that racket forward.
