GN X 690 W with F unit 454A trailing thru Libby, MT 6-19-65 I was hoping for the usual A-B-B-A lashup of F units, and was greatly disappointed when the lead unit was a geep!! The train is westbound from Whitefish and is crossing Libby Creek and approaching the town of Libby, MT. I'm not sure, much of this entire area may not be the same, as Libby Dam was built just upstream from here. I'm unsure where the new mainline intersected the original line, but it should be close to this spot. The reservoir flooded the entire route west of Eureka and north of Libby, and necessitated the rerouting of the mainline south thru a very remote area I worked in as a seasonal forester for the USFS. I remember working from a fire camp and in tents with no electricity or running water. The preliminary survey teams for the new line were working just a few miles from where I was.

It was a sad day for me, as the ride down the Kootenai River west of Eureka was spectacular, especially around Stone Hill. An anecdotal story I heard was on a drifter who was asleep on a flatcar load of lumber that got away at either Eureka or Rexford. The story said that he was so scared he couldn't get off the car and it supposedly reached 110 or so. It seems a little fast considering the curves, but nevertheless, it was possible. It's now all under water.
