I remember what a lovely place Santa Ana Canyon still was in the early 1980s. Single track through grassy hills and riverside ranchland. Then came the march of sprawl eastward from Esperanza, as you point out, George. Horseshoe Bend eventually gained two more main tracks, but the hillsides above are now lined with homes and the flat land within the curve is stuffed with businesses and parking lots. It was painful enough watching the orange groves south of El Toro and the farm fields north of there disappear.
