The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad provides daily passenger service between Antonito and Alamosa, Colorado over the San Luis & Rio Grande Valley's ex-Denver and Rio Grande Western line May through October. The trains are scheduled to connect with the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic's excursion trains at Antonito. The trains frequently run as mixed trains, hauling revenue freight cars with the passenger cars. On September 15, 2009, the Antonito to Alamosa run ran as a mixed train, consisting of a full-length dome and four covered hoppers of perlite, and was powered by the San Luis & Rio Grande Valley's B39-8 No. 8577, seen in this photo three miles north of Antonito. The dome car was previously owned by Holland America Cruise Lines and ran on the Alaska Railroad. The Rio Grande Scenic operates two other passenger trains out of Alamosa, for details about their trains visit their website at [www.riograndescenicrailroad.com], or call (800) 726-RAIL.
