With day two completed of the 10-day Minneapolis Junction to Portland OR return of the SP4449, I am pleased to report that the trip has been wonderful so far. BNSF has been a great host railroad and the Amtrak conductor, a rail fan, has been very helpful and interesting to talk to.
In spite of winter coming to the upper mid west, we still see quite a few very bundled up people trackside waving the train on its journey. One of my favorite set of viewers were the grain elevator 5-7 workers standing on top of a couple of grain cars waving to us as we went by. Riding in the super dome they were at my height.
The steam action in this cold weather is great. We are somewhat of a rolling fog bank or at least that what it looks like from the rear of the train.
Cudos to all involved in operating this, for me at least, a once in a lifetime trip.
As the schedule notes, we arrived in Minot today and layover here tomorrow. Then a 7 am departure for Havre on October 16.
