Historic equipment that connected the gold fields of western Nevada County with the main railroad line at Colfax will have a larger home, thanks to the generousity of volunteers and donors.
The Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad and Transportation Museum celebrates an expanded ability to work on and house historic equipment with a reception today.
Volunteers with the Nevada City museum, operated by the Nevada County Historical Society, have added a 35-foot-by-30-foot workshop to the building.
“It will enable us to move equipment out of the weather,” said museum Director Madelyn Helling recently as she looked outside at the drizzle of the season's first big storm. “Our goal is preservation and restoration.”
The addition to the museum cost $72,000, paid with donations, Helling said. A single railroad devotee contributed $30,000 to the project.
“And of course, Nevada City has cooperated with us on various tasks,” Helling said.
The reception starts at noon today, with a ceremony at 12:20 p.m. at the museum, 5 Kidder Court in Nevada City. Refreshments will be served from noon to 2 p.m.
Kidder Court can be reached from Gold Flat Road, by way of Bost Avenue or New Mohawk Drive.
