When you get a chance take a look at the date on some rail. I have seen rail as old as 1899. It wasn't in service any more, but I doubt that it has been out of service since 1914, that would be 15 years after your friend thinks it would have been too old. There is lots of in service rail around that was made 50 or more years ago.
