Boxcar Ends

I was reading this really old (1950's ?) trains mag, and there was this picture of a 3/4 view of a newer boxcar in it.

The really interesting thing was the end of the boxcar. It's ends were rippled like a drop in a puddle, unusual to how I have ever seen or seen since. Thinking that it could be an Eastern road. I imagine the manufacturing process would have been too expensive to warrant a massive fleet of this particular end detail, but I would like to get more info on it.

Anyone seen, or know what I've described?

Thanks in advance.
