BNSF's project to install a second track through Abo Canyon is proceeding at a slow but steady pace. The $50 million project to double track the 4.5 mile section between Scholle and Sais is intended to alleviate a major bottleneck on the former Santa Fe Transcon between Chicago and Los Angeles. Access into the canyon is now strictly off limits, with roads leading into the canyon now gated and locked. A few good photo locations are available on the east and west ends of the canyon; this one is from the Route 60 overpass at Scholle, which is the eastern end of Abo Canyon, taken on September 20, 2009. This photo shows the massive cut dug for the new track on the left; the east bound BNSF stack train is on the original alignment through the canyon.
