AT&SF 98 powered the Orange Empire Railway Museum's seven car Thomas the Tank Engine Train this year as seen here on Nov. 11, 2009. She started life as FP45 #108 in late 1967 in her gala warbonnet paint scheme which she again dons. During her career she was reported to dispatchers under 5 numbers (108, 5958, 5998, 102, and 98) and she dressed in 4 paint schemes, some twice (red and silver warbonnet, two variations of freight blue, and she was Kadachromed). Just like a lady to change her look often. There were 9 of these high speed gals built for the Santa Fe (100 - 108). Seven remain scattered around at various museums. Only 104 and 106 have been scrapped. 98 is an important diesel for two reasons. She is the only operable FP45 and runs pretty well. Museum diesels have the problem that they are never run hard enough and long enough to blow out all the built up soot. More importantly, she was the last passenger diesel Santa Fe purchased. OERM is applying for a grant to renovate this grand lady including replacing her bowed horizontal side panels.
