Since I seem to be the source for this story...here is a little more.

Weight and clearence requirements forced the circuitous routing. According to one of the truck drivers it looked something like this:

Highway 89 McCloud-Dana Cutoff
Dana Cutoff to Highway 299 at McArthur or Fall River Mills
East on 299 to Adin
South on 139 to Susanville
South on 395 to Minden/Gardnerville
West of 88 to California
