Peter,
No, I never worked for the SP but I grew up on Newhall St. in San Jose about 100 yards from the track so I was fairly well known by the SP people. That said, it was different back then as long you stayed out of the way and off the equipment unless you were invited on board. In some cases, the way to get the photos was to get in, get your photos, then get the hell out of there and not make a pest out of yourself.
