Directional running is one of the plans that's been studied. Unless something's changed in the last couple of weeks, the current plan is to run all the stacks - both directions - via Donner, subject to rerouting via the FRC as conditions require.

Prior to the recent change, Portola was the home terminal for crews working west (and east, too) out of there. Westward intermodal trains were crewed from Long and Short pools. The Long Pool had Oakland as its away from home terminal (Oakland is no longer a Home Terminal for any pool crews). Trains that did not do work at Lathrop were run to Oakland via the Cal-P, and could stay on the ex-WP as far as Haggin or make a left turn at Binney Jct. and operate via Roseville. If a crew was short on time and it was not antipicated they could make Oakland, they were swapped at Roseville with a crew out of the Rosevile to Oakland pool. I'm not 100% certain about what UP's doing now since the recent change.
