Ever have one of those absolutely fantastic days shooting trains?
Those days are few and far between, the days where every shot
works and you don't leave early and you didn't leave that one
key piece of equipment at home.
For those of you who like steam, steam in the snow, and steam at
night, please allow me to share with you my day at the New Hope
and Ivyland Railroad, a line just Northwest of Trenton, NJ on the
former Reading Railroad Company lines.
The occasion is the Winter finale of steam running both day and
night with Santa on board for the kids.
Enjoy!
My next Christmas card!
New Hope and Ivyland's #40 at Hood Trestle
A diesel worthy of inclusion! A GE C30-7 which the railroad uses on both passenger and commercial freight. A very appealing livery!
New Hope and Ivyland's #7087 at Hood
Another photo of New Hope's 2-8-0 Baldwin - telephoto, in the woods, lot's of snow.
NHIR #40 at Lower Mountain Road
A night shot of the New Hope shops featuring a Baldwin, a GE and an EMD. You gotta love this place!

and...
After nearly a year and a half, I've finally figured out the right combination of camera settings, flash equipment, patience, and technique to pull of an action nigh portrait, complete with a beautifully bodied swepted back plume. Ever focus on something that's not there and then snap the shutter in near complete darkness? I had a tendency to shoot before the train was fully in the frame. This night, I got it right. I "Knapped" it!
New Hope and Ivyland - Night Train!
Happy Holidays to all of you here on Altamont Press, and to your families!
