This day in Railroad History
January 18,1944
Today the nation's railroads were returned by the US Government to their [previous] owners after being seized to prevent a strike by employees. Negotiations had been ongoing for 14 months, but a strike had been set for Dec 30th. The govenment had taken possession, control and operation of the nation's railroads on December 27th. On January 17, 1944, an agreement was reached and a contract executed giving the employees an eight-cent an hour wage increase retroactive to February 1, 1943.

In April of 1996, Texas State Railroad locomotive TSRR 500, an ex-Santa Fe pacific type 4-6-2 is ready to pull the daily excursion train from the TSRR depot in Rusk, Texas to the other end of the line at Palestine, Texas and return. A brake problem on the TSRR 500 would cause the substitution of Alco RS-2 locomotive TSRR 7 at Palestine for the return trip to Rusk.
