Per John Signor's classic "Donner Pass": The first Rotary built in the U.S. was in 1885. Union Pacific first used a rotary in Oregon during the winter of 1885-6 in test service. This prompted Southern Pacific to order Leslie Rotary No. 5 built in December of 1887. It was used sparingly in its first few years on Donner. Extensive use of rotaries on Donner began during the winter of 1889-90.
