Pleased that the road continues to apparently be open to the public. Was this the right-of-way to the higher tunnel and short-term switchbacks? Now, mostly US Forest Service.

The Timetable "grade chart" is recommended. Two 2.2% grades (?) connected by the minimum radius vertical curve. WOW. Nearly all natural summits aren't nearly as sharp.

Regarding the notching for double stacks: Western steam era tunnels, in general, adequately clear double 9 1/2 foot cans. When the ocean shipping companies agreed to 10 1/2 foot cans, the railroads notched their tunnels as well shown in the photo.

We've been reading about Donner Pass. Now, there is one combination of the two tracks that clears double 10 1/2 foot cans. Significant reduction of Union Pacific traffic on the Feather River Route.
