This day in Railroad History
February 3, 1963
The strike-bound Florida East Coast Railway ran its first train in 10 days using management personel. Trains continued to run with supervisors in the months that followed with hundreds of acts of violence and sabotage committed against the railroad. These included removing rails, damaging switches, and firing gunshots at the locomotive cabs. There were several wrecks and in two instances trains were blown up, but there were no serious injuries or deaths. The strikes dragged on into the 1970s. Many railroad workers gave up hope of there ever being a settlement and moved on to other jobs. The strike by the non-operating unions ended December 1974. The National Mediation Board finally called a halt to the strikes by the operating unions on May 3,1977.

After undergoing testing and evaluation for several months, three of MARC's new MP36PH-3C diesels were placed in revenue service on all three of MARC's lines in early January. MARC ordered 26 of the new diesels from MPI in April 2009; three of them (Nos. 10. 11 and 12) are now on the property. This is MARC No. 12 on the lead of a Washington DC to Baltimore run boarding passengers at the Seabrook, MD MARC station on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor on January 14, 2010.
