This day in Railroad History
February 11, 1907
The Southern Pacific won its battle against the Colorado River which broke its banks in California's Imperial Valley and threatened to inundate much of the area. Flood waters broke out early in 1905 and local efforts to failed. The SP was appealed to for finances and assistance. A tough battle was fought week after week, and in November 1906, the river was turned back into its channel. A month later the levy broke, pouring water into the Salton Sea. At the urging of President Theodore Roosevelt SP went to work again, trying to dump rock into the 1,100-foot break faster than the rampaging river could sweep it away. Operations over 1,200 miles of the railroad's main line were disrupted while some 3000 cars of rock were rushed from upto 480 miles. About 80,000 cubic yards were dumped in fifteen days.

ATSF 883 climbs eastbound out of Walsenburg, Colorado in July of 1995, on a very cloudy summer day. ATSF 883 a C40-8W leads this heavy freight along with SD40-2 ATSF 5022 and SDF40-2 5252 which was formerly Amtrak 615. I used to drive from Albuquerque to Denver about once a month on business for years and this is one of the few decent shots I ever got in Walsenburg. I guess I spent too much time concentrating on the Joint Line...
