Earlier we were showing the UP 15th street swing bridge across the Tacoma Waterway. Occasionally, UP trains that did not need to switch the yard would go, "head of the bay." In otherwords, they would stay on the BN/ex-NP mainline all the way to Reservation Junction at the north end of Tacoma before crossing over to the UP/Milw line to Seattle.
Here is a UP northbound freight "highballing" UP Junction and going "head of the bay." Of real interest is the UP switch engine that shows up while the mainline freight is still rolling by. The switcher is crossing over and headed for the UP yard. I don't remember the circumstances, but my best guess is this is the UP Wabash local returning to town with a switch engine for power rather than the usual Geep.
