UP's GP7s had lower-than-normally placed number boards on the front (long hood), but in the regular location on the rear (short hood). The headlights on both ends were lower than normal (like maybe they originally had gyralites) but that doesn't explain the variation in number board location. Cockle's "Union Pacific 1977-1980" mentions the difference but doesn't say why.
