This day in Railroad History
February 13, 1954
The Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway is opened from the St. Lawrence port at Sept Isles, Quebec running north 224 miles to Schefferville, Labrador where there was an iron mine. The railroad was built by what is said to be the largest peacetime airlift in history. Construction of the isolated line took three years. There was a later built branch line 37 miles to Labrador City where mining operations continue.

February 14, 1881
The Oregon Short Line was incorporated on in the Territory of Wyoming. There were very strong ties with the Union Pacific RR. Construction began on July 11, 1881 with a ceremony at Granger, Wyoming. Construction crews drove steadily westward, conforming closely to the Oregon Trail. By 1884, a connection was made with the Oregon Railway & Navigation Company (OR&N) at Huntington, Oregon and halting its continued eastward expansion. The UP later constructed a large yard at Pocatello, Idaho along the OSL.
