This day in Railroad History
February 18, 1947
Pennsylvania Railroad’s “Red Arrow”, a Detroit to New York passenger train, derailed about two miles west of “Horseshoe Curve” neat Altoona, Pennsylvania. The train jumped the track and sent the two engines, mail car, baggage car, coach and two sleepers plunging down the embankment, overturned the diner and two sleepers and derailed three other sleepers. The coroner said that 17 bodies had been taken out of the wreck, including three members of the four-man engine crews. The injured were rushed to hospitals at Altoona, where Mercy and Altoona hospitals reported they had at least 85 casualties and more were arriving. The accident disrupted all railroad telephone communications in the area, increasing the difficulty of obtaining information and details.

February 9, 2010, spotted on Oregon Highway 6 eastbound from Tillamook, Rick Franklin Corp. moving one of two boxcars from the permanently isolated Port of Tillamook Bay Railroad. The boxcars will return to the rails somewhere near Banks, Oregon. Ironically behind the boxcar is a truck with a load of lumber formerly hauled by the POTB Railroad.
