Just drive from Castroville to the Costco parking lot in Sand City and view the empty torqued and rusting 13 miles of rail that the UP peddled to the hapless wonders of the Transportation Agency of Monterey County (TAMC) for $9 million back in 2000 or so. The Brooklyn Bridge branch, we call it. Not a revenue wheel will turn on it until it is totally rebuilt and the bridge over the Salinas River retrofitted for seismic damage due to what Loma Prieta did to it in '89. They said $38 million many years ago. But UP has their money--------or should I say, UP has our tax money, you know, "it doesn't cost us anything because the gummint paid for it".
