This day in Railroad History
February 19, 1902
The United States Department of Justice announced a Sherman antitrust suit against the Northern Securities Company. The NSC was a large railroad trust formed in 1902 by E. H. Harriman, James W. Hill, J.P. Morgan and J. D. Rockefeller. The company controlled the Northern Pacific Railway, Great Northern Railway, Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, and other associated lines. The suit was filed on behalf of President Theodore Roosevelt. When approached by J. P. Morgan to settle the issue in private, Roosevelt later remarked, "Mr. Morgan could not help regarding me as a big rival operator who either intended to ruin all his interests or could be induced to come to an agreement to ruin none." The Supreme Court decided in favor of the government in 1904. In the following seven years, 44 additional cases turned out rulings similar to the Northern Securities case. Ironically, included was the break-up of Harriman's own holdings of the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific railroads

February 20, 1973
The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, after 57 years, two months and 21 days after the mainline trolley wire was first energized, announced its intention to phase out electrified operations. The Milwakee was electrified with a 3,000-volt, direct current, overhead supply system for 440 miles between Harlowton, Montana, and Avery, Idaho, as well as 216 miles between Othello, Washington and Seattle and Tacoma. At the time of the electrification, fully 14 per cent of the railroad’s equipment was doing nothing but hauling coal for steam engines in the West.
