SD40-2s aren't going anywhere. Along with GP38-2s, They will be around in large enough numbers for at least another 10 to 15 years. The railroads have already figured out that all the Gensets in the world are no match for an updated 40/38 series unit in terms of cost, reliability, performance, parts supply and 45 years of mechanical know-how on any railroad. These units are just too damned good. Think about the SD/GP9s that are only now starting to become scarce after 50 years.
