Alex Mayes Trip Report Glenco, PA - Thanks Alex for sharing an interesting subject with the board readers. Espee99.

On February 6, 2010 a CSX coal train derailed at Glencoe, PA while descending the east slope of Sand Patch grade on the Keystone Sub west of Cumberland, MD. The 130 car coal train derailed at Bridge 24, milepost 201, sending about 113 cars off the tracks. None of the crew members was injured. Both CSX tracks were blocked by derailed cars scattered all over the right of way. CSX contracted with R. J. Corman Company and Hulcher Services, Inc. to clear the tracks. Environmental firms were also contracted by CSX to remove spilled coal from Wills Creek and take measures to prevent further contamination of the creek and surrounding areas. The line was reopened to freight traffic on February 9th. Amtrak resumed operation of the Capitol Limited on February 12th. Here are some images taken at the wreck site on February 12th and February 19th.

Bridge 24 over Wills Creek, where the derailment began. The black hose is transferring contaminated water from the creek to a nearby truck where coal particulates are being removed. In the distance is a ballast regulator and a tamping machine working on track 2. Preliminary work on track 2 was completed while I was there on February 12th, and the MOW supervisor called BB dispatcher in Baltimore to let him know. The dispatcher asked the supervisor if the 10 MPH slow order should remain, and the supervisor said he could now raise it to 25/25.
