This day in Railroad History
February 25, 1908
The first passenger train on the Hudson & Manhattan RR was operated from 19th Street to Hoboken, through the tunnel under the Hudson River. Via telegraph, President Theodore Roosevelt pressed a button which was linked to the Tubes power station, turned on the electricity and service began. The tunnel was first started in 1874.Dewitt Clinton Haskins raised sufficient funds and built more than 1000 feet of tunnel under the Hudson. Work was abandoned after an accident which resulted in the loss of 20 workers. In 1890 a new attempt was made, but money trouble soon caused the failure of this attempt. It was not until after 1900 that William Gibbs McAdoo and Charles Jacobs resumed work on the tunnel.

CSX train Q643 splits a pair of semaphore signals at North Linden, Indiana on the Monon Sub on August 13, 2007. A dozen of the venerable upper quadrant semaphore signals are still in active service on the Monon Sub in central Indiana. The historic signals were installed by the Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville Railway, which was commonly called the "Monon Route", over 80 years ago, and are among the very last active semaphores in the U.S. The General Railway Signal Company type 2A upper quadrant, top-of-the mast semaphores were installed on the Monon starting in the early 1910s; a few of them installed during that period are still in service.

Two stand-by locomotives at San Diego 22 years apart: Amtrak 222 on Sept. 10, 1988 (note, no Trolley of Coaster tracks) and Amtrak 457 on Feb. 16, 2010. The pictures speak for themselves. Easily 2000 words.
