My favorite train ride had to be in around New years 1996-1997... I had just got home from an adventurous train ride from Washington that included bad weather, missing trains because of Amtrak, rude ticket agents and more. The day after I got home, my dad and I decided that even though the "Adventure From Washington" ruined our mini vacation to the central valley, we were still going to get a train ride in. So we decided to ride the Capital from San Jose to Sacramento and back. We got held up in Ouzel Yard because the depot in Martinez was under water. While delayed, the crew died on the law. Fortunatly, the east boand Zephyr had a crew dead heading. So the Zephyer pulled up to the rear of the train, and once the water level dropped, the dead heading crew took us the rest of the way to Sacramento after a 3 hour delay. After arriving in Sacramento, we ate lunch and returned to the station for the return trip. When we got there, the Zephyr was still there as Donner Pass had just got shut down. Even as the agents were dealing with the unhappy Zephyr passengers, they had no problem answering my dad's question on whether or not there was a problem with the train going back to San Jose. There wasn't and the agent presented us with a travel voucher for our troubles.. Of all the great train rides I had, this one was the best since I got to spend some quality time with my dad.
