When the weather was cold, they pumped the cars full of steam from stationary plants before leaving SF or SJ. Ventilation fans ran off the cars' onboard generators. Particularly significant time to me, as my camera was full of images of these trains when it was stolen in June 1978! I believe P30s ran on the Sunset until about 1989 or so.
